Prospectors Ted Sheehan and Bill Kilpatrick found gold here in a rabbit's burrow, hence the name, around 1938. They initially dollied 259 ounces of gold. The Rabbit mine has the Mabel Gertrude mine just west and the Two Chinamen mine just east.
After the war the brothers J. and /or P. and T Taaffe took over. Across the two years 1947 to 1948 solid crushings were coming out every three months. From 1949 into the early 1950's the mine was taken over by H.F. Sachse and H. Howchin or F. Howchise, depending on the source. (It is quite common to come across different spellings of surnames in the newspapers, especially those that would appear foreign to the Anglo sensibilities at the time. It is assumed the names were heard by the correspondent, rather than written down, leading to them having a stab at the spelling).
Most information found on this mine was prosaic crushing information. The shaft was down to 190 feet by 1949. There was a second shaft on the lease. Rich stone was still being found at this time, including six buckets of specimen grade stone. GML 1078U. To 1947 the mine had produced 277 tonnes of ore for 1000 ounces of gold. Most of the gold was found in sulphide quartz, but was free milling.
