Beola stone quarries in orthogneisses of Orselina-Moncucco-Isorno zone (Upper Penninic), located near the small village of Trontana and Colle di Mattarella, a 413 m high hill on the southern outskirts of Domodossola, on which the Sacred Calvary Mount (Sacro Monte Calvario) complex (one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites) is located.

The two active gneiss quarries, named Ronco della Vigna and Trontana, produce a dimension stone commercially known as “Beola Grigia”.
The historical Calvario Quarry (Cava al Calvario), now closed, is one of the most ancient quarries in the Ossola Valley, as indicated by some documents that testified its activity since the XII century (Cavallo et al., 2004).
