The Queen of the Earth Gold Mine was an early lease pegged on the field, by McGregor (surname), one of the original prospecting group. The initial pothole dug into the reef at the surface, produced incredibly rich specimens, and set off a gold rush. The mine is located on its name-sake north-south lode, at the western edge of the main goldfield area.
This initial burst of gold is seen in the mine's total crushing figures of 277 tonnes of ore for 3197 ounces of gold. The prospectors located 30 000 pounds worth of gold in early Twentieth Century figures, during the first half of 1895.
For all its near surface richness, the quantity of gold available on the lease was not large. After serving its purpose of promoting the goldfield, the lease enters a semi moribund state.
By 1899, the mine is under exemption. In 1903, prospectors Potts and Salmon are extracting ore from a parallel reef on the lease, east of the main reef.
Gold is found in quartz vein material in moderately bleached basalitic host rock, as high grade narrow reef style mineralisation. Gold is related to a series of north-west striking, steep east dipping shear zones, containing quartz veining.
