At least one source states the Lady Gertrude Gold Mine was on the Black Gin line of lode, a minor reef system some 3 kilometres west of the Yerilla homestead and 1 kilometre south of the Kookynie-Yarri Road. More information is found under the Black Gin Gold Mine Mindat locality.

The lode ran north-south, but it is unclear if the Lady Gertrude was north or south of the Black Gin mine.

The Lady Gertrude was a very rich mine in its initial stages, highlighted by its crushing record of 73 tonnes of ore for 2690 ounces, and a second period of 194 tonnes of ore for 1830 ounces of gold. The gold was however not extensive in quantity.

The lease was originally pegged by A. McDonald. The lease was then developed by the Yerilla Development Syndicate, which raised rich specimen stone during 1896.

The Yerilla Development Syndicate held a shareholder meeting in November 1897 at Coolgardie. It was decided to liquidate the syndicate and raise new capital as the Lady Gertrude Gold Mining Company NL. This apparently did not last long either as by the beginning of 1899 the owner of the mine is G.B. Fletcher.

Fletcher had been the mine manager for the Lady Gertrude when being operated by the Yerilla Development Syndicate. The company owed Fletcher wages of 150 pounds, and he forced the company to put the property up for auction, purchasing the mine himself. After working it briefly himself at the 40 foot level, he let the mine to tributers McKenzie and party.

In June 1899, he turned up in Kalgoorlie, carting with him rich specimen stone from the mine to show to the local papers. Described as quartz containing very heavy nuggetty gold, as well as fine gold disseminated throughout it. The largest piece had a ribbon of gold running through it. Another was a slab of almost pure gold estimated to be carrying 120 ounces of gold alone. The specimens had come from Fletchers work at the 40 foot level earlier in the year, taken from a vein at the centre of the lode.
