The Mount Catherine Gold Mine is located 5 kilometres south-east of the Yerilla homestead, and 1 kilometre north of the Kookynie-Yarri Road. A faint track heads north just before the road makes a sharp turn south-east to east (if heading from the homestead).

The remnants of the original open pit can be seen, the main shaft, and some disturbed ground of yellowish clay. A few widely scattered shafts hidden in the scrub are found between the mine and the road, and for about 2 kilometres north of the mine.

The general impression of the operations, is the London based Mount Catherine Gold Mining Company threw a lot of money into developing it, and found very little gold. Mining went down to 200 feet, and the company in 1899 drilled further, but the hard nature of the country made the going tough. The mine manager in 1899 was a Mr Humphries. Mining ceased at the location by the company shortly after this.

The lease also lacked water necessary to operate the battery. A large amount of broken ore was left at the mine, being too poor in gold to process. The mine was developed next to a big quartz outcrop, 20 to 30 feet wide, striking north-south. There were several shafts, and a main shaft in hard massive greenstone. A large open out was on the outcrop, following irregular veins of better stone traversing the outcrop.

A report by the State Engineer in 1906, details limited prospector activity in the area by this year. These mines are largely impossible to locate today, and reflect limited near surface prospector activity.
