Kirkfield Lift Lock Is located near the southern border of Carden Township. Located north of kirkfield Ontario, County Road 6 or Kirkfield Road leads under the lift lock, which is part of the Trent Severn Waterways. This waterway leads from Port Severn Ontario, located on the south eastern shore of Georgian Bay and leads to the Bay of Quinte, in the north eastern part of Lake Ontario.
In the early 1900's parts of the waterway was excavated to accomidate commercial vessels. Since the construction of the Welland Canal this waterway is used only for tourist vessels.
At Kirkfield Lift Lock, the excavated limestone from the the canal was dumped on the north side of the waterway just west of the lift lock. This large pile of excavated material is some 10m - 15m wide, 3 - 5m high and in length is approximately 30 - 50m long. It can be seen just west of the administration building and just south west of the parking lot. Silicified brachiopods, crinoids and bryozoans fossils can be found as well as some unique minerals.
