The lease was taken up by J. Spicer in 1898, and he remained here until at least 1939. Active mining took place until 1904, and intermittently thereafter. A battery was removed from the Midas Gold Mine in 1901, and re-erected at Grafter. The battery was the main source of crushings for prospectors for the next forty to fifty years, and is the main reason the site is noted in the sources.

Spicer was cyaniding the sands from the old Grafter mine in 1913, said to only just be payable. The mine itself contained a reef 2 to 4 feet wide, and had been worked to the water level at 100 feet by 1901, and later to a 200 foot depth. The deposit is found in rhyolite-quartz porphyry close to greenstone. There were two quartz reefs, which unite at the 90 foot level.

In 1902, the nearby Britannia Gold Mining Company took a six month option over the mine.

Between 1898 to 1915, the mine produced 3866 tonnes of ore for 5380 ounces of gold. Some other sources give lower figures.

The old battery was re-conditioned in 1939, with government money. It is still held by Spicer and Ward at this stage, but notes they have little capital to develop the mine further. In 1948, the 18 h.p. gas engine at the old Grafter battery was removed to replace the Darlot state battery engine. It is thought the battery at Grafter had ceased operations at some stage before this date.

The battery site is approximately one third the way between where the Malcolm-Kookynie Road crosses the railway line, and the Orient Well open pit, and borders the west side of the road. The site contains remnant battery sands, and minor machinery. Numerous historic gold workings can be found for several kilometres west, north-west and south-west.
