Köppen climate type:
Discovered by Adolph Petersen and Florence McGillicuddy in 1902. 6 acres expanded later to 18 acres. The shoot was rich with 530 tonnes taken out for 1357 ounces at 51.2 dwt. The lode was driven on south, when it suddenly faulted and was lost. Despite much exploration work, Petersen and Gleeson could not locate the reef again and the lease was abandoned in 1909.
Many prospectors over the subsequent decades tried to locate the lost reef by costeans, shallow shafts, and working over the original alluvial patch in the nearby gully.
Patrick Robinson began loaming from the east side of the gully in 1947, and followed values to a point south-east of the old Emu Shaft. He sank three pot holes, the first missed the lode by one foot, the other two hit the micaceous schist, a couple of feet from the surface. Three or four crushings subsequently followed later in 1947, amounting to 100 to 150 tonnes of ore averaging 10 dwt. Whatever was found did not last long before giving out, and the question remains if all the gold has been found
The Emu Gold Mine is five kilometres south-east of Menzies. Its is best found by following the directions to the Blowfly Gold Mine. Just before this location, a track heads south-east then south to the Springfield Mine, and then the Emu Mine further south. The road travels through the Menzies borefield, which prevents access.
