The Kensington West Gold Mine is approximately 8 kilometres east of Menzies. The area contains a series of north-south trending reefs. The Kensington West was the western most, and appears the least profitable. The Kensington West Company developed the mine across 1896 to 1898, before they ran out of capital. Little information was found. P. Durkin was mine manager.
The mine can be located by travelling along a gravel road east of the Menzies town centre, then taking the right fork. The road becomes bendy, passing the True Blue Gold Mine, before reaching the Maranoa mine. A small track heads west a few hundred metres to the Kensington mine, and the Kensington West is hidden in the scrub about 100 metres to the west, and south of the track. The nearby Menzies borefield prevents access to the site.
This area saw the murder of Wimbah (known as Tiger), in October 1898. Tiger popped up at Bulong, east of Kalgoorlie, credited with discovering gold at the location. Subsequently he was employed driving cattle between Coolgardie and Menzies. Tiger had located the body of murdered John McInnes, and he blamed the Pendinnie tribe. While camped at Kensington, Tiger was speared and killed, by members of this tribe, in a successful effort to silence him. The police at the time used aboriginal trackers to find lost people, and follow the movements of people from a crime scene. They were highly valued. The trackers followed the group accused of the crime by their tracks for about 130 kilometres, and were arrested near Kanowna.
