The British King, British King West and British King East gold mines are historic leases which adjoined each other, two kilometres west south-west of the Melrose station homestead, and 200 metres north of the Darlot-Weebo Road.

All date from shortly after the initial gold discovery in the area in 1894. British King East was the least active of the three. The original prospectors were Fitzgerald, Maron and possibly brothers Louis and Mark Aitken.

The lease was 6 acres, with four shafts, one down to 80 feet. By 1904, 700 tonnes of ore had been crushed from the lease averaging 18 dwt. The east-west reef was 2 feet wide.

The lease was taken over by the Fingall Reef Extended Company in 1900, who had also acquired the British King and British King West leases. They abandoned the leases in 1903, due it is said high managerial costs from Bewick Moreing and Co.

A crushing is noted from the lease in 1913, but the owner's name is not recorded. In 1915 a report surfaces, that prospectors are trying to un-water the mine, but the boiler broke down, the mine re-flooded. Water in all three leases would reach to 30 feet from the surface, without pumping equipment. This deterred prospectors with no capital to install expensive equipment, and no more information was found on mining at the lease.
