At present the location is marked by a small abandoned open pit called the Cardinia Gold Mine. In the past, the area was called Cardinia Creek, containing a number of small prospector shows mined intermittently from around the turn of the century until recent times.
The location is approximately 20 kilometres north-east from the former Malcolm town site. The mine can be found by taking a dirt track, just east of the Malcolm railway siding on the Leonora-Laverton Road. The track heads north along the east side of the Cardinia Creek before turning north-east to the open pit.
It is believed mining started sometime shortly before 1899, but no information was found for the area's early years. The earliest report found was 1919, when Walsh and Cunningham, and also J.J. Robinson opened leases after new discoveries.
Intermittent mining occurred during the 1920's and 1930's, with prospectors coming and going, the occasional crushing, and constantly changing lease names.
P.E. Spencer and K.A. Courcier were found active here from at least 1939 to 1948. They had erected a 5 head mill and cyanide works from the earlier date. Initially stone was sent through from the nearby Old East Lynne mine dump, until there was enough stone from their own mine to operate the battery.
Several leases are mentioned in their name, and for the period were the dominant prospectors for the area. Their leases include Rangoon, and Inglewood.
In 1948, Felix Alexander Biederman of 30 Pembroke Square London took out the , Black Chief, Sir Holland Smith, Anaconda Gold Reefs (this is not the same Anaconda as that at Eulaminna), totalling 60 acres. To 1948, the last 3 mines had produced at total of 795 tonnes of ore for 510 ounces of gold.
The deposit overlies a sequence of mafic and felsic volcanic lithologies, and locally derived epiclastic sediments, on the western limb of the regionally faulted, south plunging Benalla Anticline.
Gold is found in 1 to 5 metre, steep dipping zones of shearing and quartz, trending north north-west or north-south.
