This was an active gold mine in the late 1930's. It is located some 25 kilometres north of the Mount Keith nickel Mine, and just south of the Kingston nickel prospect, east of the Goldfields Highway. A number of old gold mining shafts are in the area.
The mine in 1934 was owned by Hammerston, Critch and party, and at the time was the only operating gold mine in the area. The Pomme D'Or Gold Mining Co NL as floated with 20 000 pounds capital in July 1934. It was oversubscribed within 48 hours. The company made a loss in its first financial year, but entered into profit by 1936.
This was despite the shaft collapsing, taking the poppet frame with it at 2 am in February 1936. No-one was injured as the mine did not work at night. The company dismissed the incident, stating it was no more than a prospecting shaft anyway, and they could now sink a new shaft and access new ore. These days it would have resulted in a full scale health and safety enquiry, with large fines, but no-one really cared about such things in 1936.
The mine was described at the time as having an open cut, a width of 10 feet, averaging 7 dwt. The shaft averaged 5-10 dwt from the 100 foot level. A cyanide plant was erected in 1935, and there was also a plant capable of 100 tonnes of crushings per week. The company was actually producing 250 tonnes per month. After the shaft collapse, a new 5 head stamp battery was purchased to go with the new shaft.
On August 18 1937, the Coolgardie Brilliant NL acquired the property. Then the appropriately named Perth company Options Ltd took out a 12 month option over the mine in May 1938.
One year later it is assumed they purchased the mine, as the poppet legs, manager's house, and plant were being dismantled, and carted to Wiluna to GML 552J, which the company held an option over. And that was it for the Pomme D'Or.
