The Wiluna area was originally called the Lake Way District, then Weelona, before Wiluna was settled on. The Weelona Gold Mine was directly south-west of the Wiluna town site, on the western side of the highway. Little remains of the old historic workings.
During its life, 860 tonnes of ore was crushed for 760 ounces of gold.
The only meaningful information about the location was found in 1902. The lease covered 24 acres, with several shafts. The main vertical shaft passed the lode at the 63 foot level. At the bottom were two drives, north and south, both at 50 foot length, on an 18 inch wide reef. To the north by 400 feet was the second shaft to 40 feet depth on a quartz reef 9 feet wide. Sixty feet further north was an open cut 10 feet deep and 40 feet long. 'Nice' specimens were said to have come from the lowest levels.
The Weelona Reef formed long lens shaped quartz veins forming a long line of reefs, 2 miles long. Apart from gold, the reef also contained according to Gibb-Maitland antimony sulphides of lead and copper. This is of little help and could be a number of species.
