St. Agnes Block
A former historic gold mine.
Valkyrie is old Norse for 'chooser of the slain'. They are female figures in Norse mythology who choose those who will die in battle, and escort the warrior to Valhalla, ruled by the god Odin.
Sources state it was formerly known as St. Agnes Blocks. There was also a neighbouring lease called St Agnes. It is reported in 1898, St Agnes Blocks was explored by an English syndicate who owned 3 leases totalling 30 acres. From the south the leases were St Agnes No 1 North Extended, Eva, and Norseman Central. The two former were on the St Agnes reef, and the only ones explored to any extent. Near the St Agnes lease boundary, a shaft had been sunk to 30 feet, and a number of costeans. On the hill above, were 3 shafts, the deepest to 30 feet. To the north on the Eva lease, a shaft had been sunk to 80 feet, on a reef 18 inches wide. At 60 feet sulphides appeared in the quartz. The St Agnes Blocks syndicate also owned a lease 1 mile to the east called Narracoorte.
The mine appears to have been developed by the Valkyrie Gold Mining Company 1901 to 1904. This company was based in Adelaide, although some sources state it was financed from England.
They closed down the mine in 1904, stating no funds. Local media lambasted the company, stating it was a rich mine, with no valid reason for closing. W. Baird, Harry Thrupp, McMorrine, and Evans purchased the mine, and were active until 1908.
