The Abbotshall Gold Mine is approximately 5 kilometres south-west of Norseman, just south of the southern extent of the Lake Cowan salt-pan. Historically the mine was named as part of the Mount Kirk area.
It is a shear hosted deposit, with high grade gold associated with steep plunging shoots within the shear zone. The host rock is intensely sheared package of mixed mafic and felsic volcanic rocks called the Abbotshall Beds. These beds are 800 to 4500 feet thick of meta-jaspilites, with interbedded basaltic rocks and clastic metasediments.
The mine first came to notice in 1911, when the Cumberland Company took over operations. They sank two shafts, mined some rock, expended loads of money, found the reef to be large and low grade, and by the end of the year had abandoned the lease. The following year tributers were on the lease.
In 1937, the old shaft is being cleared out by Norseman Development NL, on option, covering two adjoining leases totalling 55 acres, GML 1596 and 1597. Some mining of the oxidised ore took place, again with dis-appointing results, and this ceased by 1941.
342 tonnes at 214.45 ounces was taken out by a pair of miners in 1943. Some small crushings were put through from the mine in 1946 by A.M. Richardson.
The total mined at the site prior to 1984 was 5600 tonnes at 8 g/t. Then in 1997 two open pits were developed at the site, with 136 000 tonnes of ore at 2.5 g/t.
The site was owned by Matsa Resources, however Panoramic Resources took over 70% of the project in July 2012. The site has an Inferred JORC resource of 30 000 ounces, mainly directly south of the old pits.
