Mine maps locate this just south-west of the Mary Lena open pit, 5 kilometres north of Marvel Loch. The lease was taken out by the discovering prospectors at the end of 1909. They were Frank Macaulay, Archibald McMillan, and brothers Ernest and George Simpson. GML 913. 24 acres. Xantippe.
Reports at the time indicate great activity in the area, with prospecting leases both north and south. One or some in a different name probably covered the Mary Lena Mindat entry of which no historic information was found. A rich find in 1946 called the Christmas Gift is north of Xantippe, somewhere on or near the Mary Lena.
The area for the Xantippe Mine does not appear to contain much in the way of workings, but an on the ground inspection may uncover more.
A journalist at the time waxed lyrical about the mine's prospects, however it quickly failed to live up to expectations. Ten months after pegging the lease, a shaft was down to 45 feet on a lode of quartz, ironstone, schist, and kaolinised seams. As he was reporting this, the lease was in danger of forfeiture for non payment.
The now politically incorrectly named Abo Gold Company sampled the Xantippe Mine in 1935, stating there were 4 shafts on a lode 40 feet wide, proved to a depth of 159 feet. The values found were low.
