This sub locality has been added to define the broad area where Kentucky agates are found. The Knobs Region of Kentucky is a wide “u” shaped arc that extends for about 230 miles through central Kentucky. The eastern portion of the Knobs Region is bounded on the east by the Cumberland Plateau. The region is made up a complex system of creeks and rivers that have eroded the edge of the Cumberland Plateau into a network of ridges and conical hills called “knobs”.
The Kentucky Agate district, where the agates are found, is comprised of six counties; Powell, Madison, Estill, Lee, Rockcastle, and Jackson. The agates formed in a narrow band in the Nada member of the Borden Formation located near the contact with the overlying Renfro member. The host rock is an olive green to gray siltstone. Most of the agates are found as alluvium in the stream beds. The land is privately owned and permission must be granted for collecting.
