The Lorrain side is the left side of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines valley.
It was separated before the 16th century and French annexation by King Louis XIV.
Before this time, this side (north) was from the Lorraine Dukes.
Right side was under Austrian Habsburg empire authority and governed by the Rappolstein family (Ribeauvillé lords, 11th to 17th centuries).

Perhaps the most important and richest mine of the district, Sankt Jacob of Lorraine is on the edge of town. The econd important sector, the Musloch-Stimbach complex, was worked before the 16th century up to 1900.
Just on the edge of the town, is the Vallon de la goutte des pommes mining area ('valley of the apple drop'), another important 16hth century mining area.

As this locality lies in the Sainte Marie-aux-Mines district, the place is protected by an archaeological mining district status and all collecting is prohibited.
