Located about 1 kilometre west of the Coolgardie-Norseman Highway, and west of the Mandilla Homestead on the highway. The Wattle Dam mine and Spargoville Group nickel prospects are west and north-west of the mine.
The mine was developed on a palaeochannel gold deposit called West Mandilla. The host rocks in the area are a sequence of mafic and ultramafic rocks, with a further sequence of felsic volcaniclastic and metasedimentary rocks of the Mandilla Formation. The sedimentary sequence is intruded by the Emu Rocks monzogranite. The gold deposit was discovered under 20 metres of overburden.
Mining commenced in July 2006 and finished in April 2007. Stockpiles were processed until October 2007. The ore was processed at the Higginsville plant. Altogether 48 000 tonnes of ore was processed at 5.22 g/t yielding 20 619 ounces of gold.
Nearby prospects uncovered through exploration include East Mandilla which is a series of stacked quartz veins within a hematite altered porphyritic granite east of the Mandilla pit. The veins strike east-west and dip south shallowly. The veins are up to 50 metres long and range from a few centimetres to 6 metres thick, and reach a depth of at least 400 metres. There is an indicated resource here of 356 805 tonnes at 3.04 g/t yielding 34 873 ounces.
The Diana Prospect is a 900 metre long anomaly 2 kilometres south-east of the Mandilla pit.
The Mandilla gold mine is marked by an abandoned sinuous, irregular north-south trending, relatively shallow pit, with a further tiny round pit adjoining to the south. The mullock pile is directly west of the pits.
