In June 1894, the Golden Bar Gold Mining Company, was successfully floated in Adelaide. It was formed to develop the mine less than 5 kilometres south-east of Coolgardie. A Krupp ball mill and cyanide works were installed. Historically the mine was at the foot of a north-south trending low hill, immediately north Moon's Mine, and across a small gully at the foot of another low hill is McCullock's Gold Mine.

Things did not start well, with lower gold grades than expected. Two directors, E.W. Ellis and W.H. Woodhead inspected the property, and determined gold was being lost due to a poor processing procedure. The mine manager resigned and the mine was temporarily closed. With improvements in processing, the mine saw regular crushings until 1900. Like all the mines in the area, it was a large low grade affair. In June 1896, native copper and cuprite was struck at the 130 foot level.

In 1902, E.W. Ellis is still director, and reports from a shareholder meeting in Adelaide, that exploration work had been undertaken but nothing payable found. It was voted to wind up the company.

The mine was under tribute to Smitheren and Martin (surnames) in 1905. There was a fall of earth, with both men partially buried. It was 12 hours before they were discovered, and it took another 20 hours for them to be rescued, in a delicate operation to try and prevent further caves-ins. By this stage Martin was dead.
