The hourglass shaped abandoned water filled pit is about 2 kilometres east of the main Plutonic pit. The tailings heap is immediately south of the Salmon pit. Mining began here in 1993. It was reported Barrick Gold was mining at the pit in 2005. In this same year, it was stated Salmon has probable reserves of 292 000 tonnes at 2.9 g/t yielding 27 000 ounces, and proven 118 000 tonnes at 0.7 g/t yielding 2 800 ounces of gold. Total production at the location was 0.3 million ounces of gold.

The upper level is saprolite and clays 30 metres thick. This overlies a discontinuous pisolitic laterite horizon, re-worked variably as alluvium. The basement greenstone rocks consist of two units being gently dipping mafic rocks with siliceous intrusions and extensive faulting; and secondly underlying this is ultramafic units with clay and less fracturing. The gold mines on the field are excavated on a near surface water aquifer. Surface water in the Salmon pit is within 5 metres of the top of the pit.
