Developed by William Steadman, who also discovered Poverty Flat alluvial area, leading to the Mount Magnet goldrush. The mine was 1.5 kilometres east of the former Paynesville townsite. Arthur Moses and C. Bauer were involved in developing the mine.
The reef was rubbly on the surface but became more solid at depth. 12 acre lease. Initially sensationally rich, but it didn't last. A shaft to 60 feet was sunk on a small alluvial area. The reef an iron oxide stained quartz formation. The lode was 12 feet wide.
