In November 1894, prospectors Lennon and Parker found gold north of Mount Magnet. There was an alluvial goldrush, and within a year or two, syndicates and companies were sinking shafts onto the reefs. The town of Lennonville, named after one of the original prospectors was declared in September 1898. The main street largely burn't down in 1909, and all that remains now is a railway station platform and minor ruins.
At the original gold find, a mine called Rock of Ages was developed. Despite its importance historically, it was never a substantial producer. The lease (GML 94) was forfeited in December 1897. In total it produced only 43 tonnes for 41 oz
