Marked by a single chimney stack just to the North of the A394 at Retanna Hill are the remains of a small Tin mine known as Retanna Hill Mine. The mine was also known as Retanna Hill and Viscar Mine. Over a century or more ago the land surrounding this stack was uncultivated croft land on which resided a Richard Andrew. Richard was known by the nickname of Dicky Ding and as such the mine became locally known as Bal Ding a mistake that was transcribed to the 1908 Ordnance survey map causing some confusion making it appear there were two mines on the hill, one Bal Ding the other Retanna Hill mine.

The plan of the sett shows that it contained four named shafts, Scott's shaft, Hughe's shaft, Fox's shaft and Western shaft.

A Tin lode was worked from Hughe's shaft which is located 157 yards west of the road junction at Buteriss Gate. Hughe's shaft was sunk on the underlie to the 10 fathom level (60ft).

Scott's shaft, the deepest, was located 160 yards South West of Hughe's shaft and was sunk on the underlie to the 30 fathom level (180ft).

Western shaft is located 80 yards South West of Scott's shaft and is sunk to the 10 fathom level.

Fox's shaft is shown as 40 yards North North East of Scott's shaft but, along with Western shaft, is not thought be connected with the other workings.

The 10 fathom level extends from 5 fathoms North East of Hughe's shaft to 20 fathoms South West of Scott's shaft, a distance of 110 fathoms. (660 feet) Hughe's and Scott's shafts are connected on the 10 fathom level.

The 20 fathom level extends for 33 fathoms North East and 20 fathoms South West from Scott's shaft and the 30 fathom level for 10 fathoms North East.

A crosscut was reported as being driven 15 fathoms South East from the North Eastern end of the 20 fathom level intersecting another lode at 10 fathoms South but was not developed further.

The amount of stoping within the mine is not known

The mine allegedly produced 22 tons of Black Tin 1853 with some further sales in 1864. The mine employed 18 persons and employed the use of a 22 inch engine to work the mine.

Thomas Spargo in his book " The Mines of Cornwall 1865 edition" records Retanna Hill mine as situated in the Parish of Wendron in 512 shares. The purser being a Mr Wm T Scott of Falmouth. The manager Captain John Daw Junr of Redruth. The mineral Lord - the Duke of Cornwall with dues of 1-18th. Spargo recorded the mine being 30 fathoms in depth with no adit. It employed 18 men. The mine was pumped by a rotary 22 inch engine. The mine was working in August 1863 for Tin

The Company was wound up in 1868.
