A young man called Thomas Johnson from Mt Magnet in 1891 discovered a well defined and rich reef south of Mount Magnet. It was found while he was working for a Geraldton syndicate. He subsequently worked the deposit at this early stage of gold mining around Mount Magnet. Specimens studded with gold were taken into Geraldton. Johnson sold his share of the lease to prospectors for 50 pounds.
This location is part of the Britannia Well gold area, east of the Britannia Shear, and Fairclough's Reward mines. The site contains a collection of historic shafts and workings.
