Serra de Monsanto, Lisboa, Distrito de Lisboa, Portugal
Monsanto is part of the volcanic massif of Lisbon. This mountain (227 meters high) is composed by a core of limestone surrounded by a mantle of basalt.
In the 19th century, Monsanto had several quarries from which limestone, the raw material for the growing urban construction in Lisbon at the time, was extracted. Scattered across various locations in the mountain range, they have long since been deactivated.
