A former placer drift Au occurrence/mine located in the SE¼ sec. 13, T5N, R11E, MDM, 2.2 km (1.4 miles) SSW of Mokelumne Hill (town), in Chili Gulch. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Mineralization is a placer Au deposit. The lower paleochannel is 200 feet wide and contains "blue gravel" with a 5½ foot thick layer of pay gravel. The upper (Duryea) paleochannel is 90 feet above the lower at 100 feet wide and contains 12 to 15 feet of pay gravel capped by rhyolite and andesite tuffs. Local rocks include Tertiary pyroclastic and volcanic mudflow deposits, unit 9 (Cascade Range).
Workings include underground openings. In 1887, the old tunnel was reopened for 1,000 feet. A new tunnel was advanced for 500 feet in the upper channel. A 10-stamp mill was erected.
