Köppen climate type:
West-dipping concretion zones in Upper Cretaceous shales exposed on the margins of the Black Hills Monocline near the intersection of the "D" road and the New Haven-Oshoto road approximately 3 miles south of New Haven in Crook County, Wyoming. There are several concretion bearing horizons extending around the southern, western and northwest flanks of the Black Hills uplift. Many contain calcite and, much more rarely, significant baryte crystals. Baryte crystals from a relatively restricted area are similar in morphology and color to those better known specimens from Elk Creek in South Dakota. Size ranges up to approximately 5 cm although larger, clear crystals have been found in another concretion bearing horizon nearby.
