The presence of amber in the territory of the Modena Province has long been known (Jervis, 1874; Malagoli, 1884; Strobel, 1886). Attributed to the Oligocene (Skalski & Viggiani, 1990), it is a cherry red-brownish, turbid and often superficially altered amber that occurs as droplets and small nodules scattered on the surface of a stratified molasse rock with a large amount of carbonized vegetables remains. The Castelvecchio territory is renowned being subject to landslides, so the amber findings are possible in an almost wide area. The coordinates shown below corresponds to the exact point of my personal findings [Roberto Bosi] of 1978 and 1980.
An outcrop containing this amber, consisting of calcareous sandstones intercalated with siltitic and clayey levels, has been recently investigated (Neri et al., 2016). The fossiliferous levels present in this formation allow to attribute this amber to the Cretaceous (in contrast to what previouly published in the literature).
Septarian concretions are found in the badlands.
