A MINA DO "PINTOR" EM ASFAMIL

Segundo o Catálogo das Minas de Ferro do Continente, da autoria dos Agentes Técnicos de Engenharia Costa Moura e Silva Carvalho, editado pelo Serviço de Fomento Mineiro (1952), no dia 17 de Março de 1909 foi registada por Alexandre Roux a descoberta duma mina de ferro situada em Asfamil, freguesia de Rio de Mouro concelho de Sintra, distrito de Lisboa. O estudo geológico do terreno, onde se apresenta o jazigo de ferro de Asfamil, é constituído por calcários cretácios manchados de quando em quando por cúpula da formação basáltica da região lisbonense.

O Jazigo que tem o aspecto de camada ou depósito, é recheado por óxidos hidratados de ferro de aspecto hematítico de coloração variável, por vezes vermelha, por vezes anegrada, parece ter sido um depósito sedimentar provavelmente de carbonato de ferro transformado em óxidos pela acção atmosférica. O proprietário era pintor de talento, teve como propósito da sua exploração a utilização dos minérios para o fabrico de cores para a pintura, e já possuía alguns aparelhos para a trituração, lavagem e mistura dos finos para a preparação das tintas. A morte impediu-lhe realizar o projecto criando uma indústria nova e interessante no nosso país. Alexandre Roux tinha vindo para Portugal abrir os Grandes Armazéns do Chiado Lisboa nos finais do século XIX.

Normalmente o minério de ferro é utilizado para fins siderúrgicos e no fabrico de ferramentas de todo o tipo. No entanto, Roux pretendia obter cores para as suas pinturas. Infelizmente faleceu em 1911, e desse modo os Ocres de Asfamil perderam-se para sempre.
