The coastal cliffs of Cape Espichel (Cabo Espichel) consist of a succession of limestone, marl, and sandstone layers over 600 m thick, dating from 150 to 140 million years ago, representing the continuous transition from the Upper Jurassic to the Lower Cretaceous. Beyond the site’s exceptional scenic value, these layers are of significant scientific importance, as they were deposited in diverse coastal environments and contain a rich fossil record. Dinosaur footprints are present in several layers, including the famous Pedra da Mua on the southern cliff of Lagosteiros Beach, which has been protected as a natural monument since 1997.

Deve-se a Vicente de Souza-Brandão (1863-1916) o conhecimento do espichelito, um tipo de rocha filoniana, novo para a ciência, descrito em 1907, cujo nome evoca o Cabo Espichel, a região da respectiva proveniência.
Espichelito – Lamprófiro mesocrático, analcímico, com horneblenda, augite, olivina, magnetite, calcite e pirite, nos fenocristais, e labradorite, ortoclase, horneblenda, augite, analcima, biotite e apatite, na pasta, descrito em filões do Cabo Espichel.

The discovery of espichelite—a type of dyke rock new to science, first described in 1907—is credited to Vicente de Souza-Brandão (1863–1916). Its name refers to Cabo Espichel, the region from which it originates.
Espichelite is a mesocratic, analcime-bearing lamprophyre, containing hornblende, augite, olivine, magnetite, calcite, and pyrite in the phenocrysts, and labradorite, orthoclase, hornblende, augite, analcime, biotite, and apatite in the groundmass. It has been described in the dykes at Cabo Espichel.
