Chalchofen (Kalchofen; Kalchofenweg; Dorfstrasse), Wangen bei Olten, Bezirk Olten, Kanton Solothurn, Schweiz
A pre-historic (late neolithic) Silex mine comprising several shafts, located 2.5 km WSW from Olten.
This locality was already mentioned by A. Schweizer in 1937. In the 1970’s remains of a mine were located during construction work and in 2009 a system of shafts and cross cuts was located at Kalchofenweg 10 (N47.34690 E7.88378), but most of it had already been destroyed during earlier civil construction work.
However, in 2010 another shaft system was located nearby at Dorfstrasse 255 (N47.34567 E7.88174), again when excavating for a new house. This time the site was in good condition. 8 shafts, about 3.5 m deep and 7 crosscuts were found intact. It was worked from 4’000 to 2’500 B.C..
After the investigation by the archeologists the entrances were closed and are not accessible anymore.
