Bergwerk Elgg, Schneitberg, Elgg, Bezirk Winterthur, Kanton Zürich, Schweiz
A former lignite mine worked from 1763 to 1838. The brown coal was mostly used for local industrial and domestic purposes in the nearby city of Winterthur.
It is located about 1 km N of Elgg, on the hill called Schneitberg.
This mine is better known for its fossils. Parts of Limnaeus pachygaster, Crocodilas büticonensis, Testudo escheri, Mastodon turicensis, Rhinoceros, Anchytherium aurelianense, Pliopithecus platyodon, Hylobates antiquus and many others were found.
The mine comprised 3 adits, with crosscuts in each adit, it reached a total length of adits of around 3’000 m, see attached historical drawing.
The Gisental (or Birmenstall) adit, located at N47.50425 E8.87219 (Swiss 708000 262486) was in 2002 only accessible through its back door (drainage adit) at N47.50522 E8.87345 (Swiss 708093 262596).
The central adit is located at N47.50440 E8.86494 (Swiss 707454 262493) just behind the tapping of the spring (Quellwasserfassung) and was accessible in 1991.
From the western adit near Unter Schneit at N47.50797 E8.85662 (Swiss 706820 262879) one can see faint signs of the dump and the adit entrance (the adit itself is caved in).
