The disused Jasper Quarry exhibits one of the most peculiar types of Portuguese sedimentary rocks: the Arrábida Breccia. This breccia is composed of rock fragments of multiple colours cemented together by a redish material. The importance of this geosite is also due to the rare occurrence of several geological structures with an exceptional exposition, namely faults affecting limestones that were related to the tectonic evolution of the western Iberian Margin and the opening of the North Atlantic Ocean 160 million years ago. The Arrábida breccia was formed about 10 million years later on top of the limestones and it was not affected by these faults.
