The Camadas de Guimarota — also known simply as Guimarota or Camadas de Alcobaça — is a disused coal mine near the city of Leiria, in central Portugal. It represents an important geological formation dating to the Kimmeridgian stage of the Late Jurassic period and contains a diverse array of fossilized animals and plants, including dinosaurs and mammals. The site was extensively studied by paleontologists from the Free University of Berlin.
Caracteristícas gerais:
Antiga exploração de carvão (lenhite) abandonada. Nas suas camadas carbonáceas encontra-se uma das mais importantes faunas de mamíferos mesozoicos a nível mundial. O riquíssimo conteúdo fossilífero revelou a presença de restos de plantas (macrorrestos, polénes e carófitas), ostracodos, foraminíferos, lamelibrânquios, gastrópodes, peixes, anfíbios, répteis, dinossauros, pterossauros, aves (próximas de Archaeopterix) e mamíferos representados por exemplares correspondentes a quatro ordens (Docodonta, Multituberculata, Dryolestida e Zatheria) dos quais ocorrem ossos, por vezes dando esqueletos completos incluindo crânios, peças bocais e inúmeros dentes.
