See also Mount Iron Mine. Two large and deep pits have been dug 50 metres further up the hill from the Mount Iron Mine pit. In 1907 red, yellow and white ochre was 'discovered' (it had been known about for 40 000 years beforehand by the local indigenous population). The reports describe the amount available as 'tonnes of the stuff'. A local Ravensthorpe syndicate was taken to the site by an un-named local indigenous woman, who is described in typical ignorant fashion of the time as a black gin. The woman called the site Wilgee, and the local syndicate at least named the lease after this. It had been used as war paint the report states. It was described
as pure ochre, soapy, very fine, and ready to be bagged with no processing and exported, which is what the syndicate intended to do with it. The reports also state iron conglomerate is in the vicinity impreganted with gold, which is how nearby Mt Iron Gold Mine got its name.
