A former small lignite mine near Mariatrost, 6 km NNE of Graz at N47.11630 E15.47737 at an elevation of 520 m.
The coal seam was located in 1766 by Ignaz Geist and Nikolaus Poda. The mine was worked with interruptions from 1800 till 1927 under different owners. From 1898 on the production was increased when the “Elektrische Kleinbahn Graz – Mariatrost” became operational and the coal was transported to Graz by hitching freight cars to the streetcars.
The mine consisted of several short adits and shallow shafts (Franziscistollen, Alfredstollen).
The yearly production was up to 900 metric tons and up to 20 miners were employed. The coal was generally of poor grade.
