Alburrica is a riverside beach located in the city of Barreiro. It is formed by a small peninsula that extends over the area where the Coina River meets the Tagus River.
In the same location, you can find the Alburrica windmills, a symbol and heritage of the city of Barreiro. The three Alburrica windmills were built in 1852. The largest of the mills is named "Gigante" (Giant). The Gigante Mill, unlike the other two, is of Dutch design and was decommissioned in 1919.
The one in the middle is the "Poente" (West), and the last one is the "Nascente" (East). The Nascente and Poente Mills are of a common type, featuring cylindrical two-story towers, movable roofs, and two millstones. They were decommissioned in 1950. The Barreiro City Council acquired them in 1973.
