Geologia e geomorfologia

L'area dei monti delle Cesane rappresenta un ampio rilievo con altezza massima di 648 metri che da Fossombrone si estende per una lunghezza di 15-20 km fino ad Urbino. Dal punto di vista geoloico rappresenta una ampia struttura anticlinalica con orientazione dell'asse nord nord-ovest sud sud-est, facente parte, assieme alla vicina anticlinale Monte Pietralata - Monte Paganuccio della dorsale marchigiana. Tale struttura anticlinalica è formata da facies prevalentemente calcaree e calcareo-marnose con al nucleo quindi i terreni più antichi ( Scaglia Bianca e Rossa ) , mentre nelle zone più prossimali che ad ovest rappresentano la sinclinale del fiume Meauro ritroviamo terreni più giovani come il Bisciaro, Schlier e depositi marnoso arenacei. L'area presenta diffuse faglie sia dirette che inerse con un esteso sovrascorrimento che spinge i terreni dela sinclinale del fiume Metauro ad est verso il bordo occidentale dell'anticlinale Monti delle Cesane. Dal punto di vista geomorolofico l'are si presenta come un vasto rilievo con fianchi più o meno aclivi a secoda dei versanti e dalla cima arrotondata o quasi appiattita dai fenomeni erosivi. I fianchi infatti sono incisi da numerosi corsi d'acqua aventi prevalente carattere torrentizio, mentre a sud sud-ovest in corrispondenza di Fossombrone, la dorsale è stata erosa dal fiume Metauro che scavando da prima in terreni alluvionali e successivamente in terreni calcarei a dato vita a formazioni geomorfologiche molto tipiche chiamate Marmitte, dovute alla combinazione di fattori litologici e idrodinamici del corso d'acqua. Tutta la dorsale è bordata sulla sua parte inferiore da diffusi terrazzi alluvionali di epoca quaternaria, mentre si rinvengono varie manifestazioni franose specie sui terreni più marnosi. Si nota invece una importante frana complessa su terreni delle scaglie e deteriti alluvionali, che ha interessato una vasta porrzione del versante sopra il piccolo centro di San Lorenzo, frazione di Fossombrone.

Geology and geomorphology

The area of ​​the Cesane mountains represents a large relief with a maximum altitude of 648 meters that extends from Fossombrone for a length of 15-20 km up to Urbino. From the geological point of view, it represents a wide anticlinal structure with orientation of the north-north-west-south-south-east axis, forming part of the Marche ridge, together with the nearby anticlinal Monte Pietralata - Monte Paganuccio. This anticlinal structure is made up of predominantly calcareous and calcareous-marly facies with the oldest soils at the core (Scaglia Bianca and Rossa), while in the more proximal areas to the west they represent the syncline of the Meauro river where we find younger lands like Bisciaro, Schlier, and arenaceous marly deposits. The area has widespread faults both direct and inverted with an extended overthrust that pushes the syncline of the Metauro river to the east towards the western edge of the Monti delle Cesane anticline. From a geomorphological point of view, the area appears as a vast relief with more or less active flanks depending on the slopes and with a rounded or almost flat top due to erosion. The sides are in fact engraved by numerous watercourses having a prevalent torrential character, while in the south-south-west at Fossombrone, the ridge has been eroded by the Metauro river that, digging first into alluvial soils and subsequently into calcareous soils given life to very typical geomorphological formations called Marmitte, due to the combination of lithological and hydrodynamic factors of the watercourse. The entire ridge is bordered on its lower part by widespread alluvial terraces of the Quaternary era, while various landslides are found, especially on the marliest grounds. On the other hand, we note an important landslide on soils of scales and alluvial detritus, which affected a large area of ​​the slope above the small town of San Lorenzo, a hamlet of Fossombrone.
