A quartz occurrence located on the 180 degree bend of U.S. highway 550, towards the South, just as it leaves city of Ouray.
According to Robert Stoufer, "[t]his location is a cut in the Leadville Limestone in the city limits of Ouray on Hwy 550."
This pocket produced very large (to 15 cm each) of quartz casts (epimorphs) after anhydrite, most likely (labeled as after barite for many years). The clear to milky quartz and pristine casts make it one of the best in the world for such casts. The small pocket was cleaned out in early 1990s by Colorado collectors. The OS stands for "Oh, shit," a reasonable exclamation upon pulling out such perfect, large examples. See extraLapis English No. 15, p.44 for Virgil Lueth's analysis that these are casts after anhydrite.
