A former lignite (Braunkohle) mine at Au near Turnau, which was started around 1600. The lignite was mined mostly for local use and it wasn't until 1893, when a narrow gauge railway line was constructed between Kapfenberg and Au-Seewiesen, that the mine also served a wider market. Part of the railway line was in operation until 1999, but the section that connected to the mine was taken out of service in 1959.
The mine was worked by seven different owners until 1917, when it was taken over by the Böhler Brothers company, which used the low-grade coal in a power station. The mine continued working intermittently until the ore body was depleted in 1955. Between 1917 and 1955, about 900,000 metric tons (992,080 short tons) were shipped.
The workings comprised several adits to a length of several hundreds of feet. Most of them are now obliterated, except for the Egydi adit (Egydistollen). It is inaccessible though, and a chapel to St Barbara has been built at its entrance.

In the mine about 4700 m of rails were installed.
Hartite was first reported as occurring here by Sigmund Zois von Edelstein who died in 1819. The mine is mainly of interest because of the fossils that have been found here, including fragments of the species Trionyx, Clemmydopsis Turnauensis, Felis Turnauensis, Rhinoceros and Dicroceros. Most of them are now kept in the collections of the Universalmuseum Joanneum (Geology & Palaeontology department) at Graz, Styria, Austria.
