Plenkertgroeve, Valkenburg, Limburg, Nederland
The Plenkertgroeve ("Plenkert quarry") or Monstergrot ("Monster Cave") is a marl quarry in the Dutch municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul in South Limburg. The underground quarry is located on the west side of Valkenburg on the Plenkertstraat in Plenkert under the Polferbos slope forest on the northern edge of the Margraten Plateau in the transition to the Geuldal. At the site, the plateau plunges steeply for several meters.
The Alpha Quarry is located approximately 100 meters to the southeast, also to the east behind the former Reformed Church is the Loisel quarry in the rock wall, to the south is the Gemeentegrot ("Municipal Cave") quarry and to the west are the Groeve behind Villa Rozenheuvel and the flint mines of Valkenburg.
The quarry was mined by block crushers for the extraction of limestone blocks.
The monsters from the "Monster Cave" have been moved to the De Valkenier amusement park and the quarry can no longer be visited.
In May 2011, research showed that it is not financially feasible to operate the quarry, because large investments must be made to improve stability for safe use. The quarry is therefore permanently closed to the public.
The Plenkert Quarry is a medium-sized quarry and has an area of 50 by 40 meters. The quarry has two entrances and a connection to the Gemeentegrot ("Municipal Cave") quarry. The "Monster Cave" was located in the front part.
The manager of the quarry is the Municipality of Valkenburg. In 2017, the quarry was examined for safety and was partially approved.
