Essex was originally part of the English Saybrook colony until 1844 when it merged with the Connecticut colony and became the town of Saybrook. In the 19th century, Saybrook became segregated into smaller towns. Essex became a separate town in 1852 and the name changed from Pettipaug (also known as Pettypaug or Potopaug) in 1854.
