Iron mining began in Adderbury in 1859. The first site was Sydenham
Farm in East Adderbury (SP490354), which was extracting thousands of tons of iron
ore per year. When the railway opened, many more pits were opened.
There were abortive proposals for extensive opencast working in the area in the 1960s
