This is an historically significant site, being the site of the first discovery of lignite (brown coal) in Victoria in 1857.
It is of interest that in 1857, a shaft was sunk by a prospector (James Ralph) to a depth of 226 feet while searching for gold and he found layers of clay with beds of lignite.
The mine closed in 1892 and reopened briefly in 1914 by the Victorian Central Coal and Iron Mining Company and again in 1919/20. The mine was finally closed in 1921.
Located near the town of Lal Lal (Shire of Moorabool).
The locality is now essentially farmland.
