Douglas County is on the eastern edge of the State, with the Missouri River as its eastern boundary. The Platter River marks the western boundary, and the Elkhorn River, a major tributary of the Platter, runs southward through the west-central part of the county. It is the most populous county in the state, with about a quarter of the state's population. The county seat is Omaha, the state's largest city.
