Burnett County's bedrock consists of Cambrian sandstone and 1.1 billion year old (Keweenawan) volcanic and sedimentary rocks. These are only rarely exposed due to a thick cover of glacial drift and lake deposits. Much of the county consists of the floor of Glacial Lake Grantsburg, an ice-dammed Pleistocene lake with varved clays where exposed. This flat poorly-drained terrain is well seen at Crex Meadows State Wildlife Area, near Grantsburg. Although poor in rock outcrop the area is great for bird and butterfly watching. The best outcrops of bedrock are along the St. Croix River drainage on the western edge of the county. The Precambrian volcanic and sedimentary rocks form low outcrops and rapids along the river channel. Cambrian sandstone is well exposed at Sandstone Cliffs Park west of Grantsburg. Glacial drift in the county can yield "Lake Superior" agates, drift copper nuggets and other interesting minerals to the determined collector.
