Outcrops in the woods northwest of Upson Lake expose Proterozoic rocks of the Siemons Creek Volcanic (pillowed and brecciated basalt), Bessemer quartzite and Tyler Formation slates. A layer of algal-bearing carbonate metasedimentary rock interleaved between two lava flows has been metamorphosed to "a fine-grained mat of wollastonite" (Cannon, 1996, 2011).
