Quarry in andesitic tuff on the seashore, operated in the year 1457 to provide some of the stone blocks used in the construction of Edo Castle in Tokyo (the Shogun's residence). Blocks were cut both above and below high tide line, and from offshore rocks, and the marks of these cuts can still be seen in the remaining rock today, 556 years later. Local lore says that Ohta Dohkan operated the quarry, but he was the architect of Edo Castle and it is more likely that this quarry was operated by the local lord (daimyo) on the orders of Ohta Dohkan.
