A pitchstone inselberg, the highest point on Eigg, which was formed after a volcanic eruption 58 million years ago filled-in a river valley carved through basalt rocks. The softer basalt has since been eroded leaving the harder pitchstone behind. The pitchstone contains a high percentage of phenocrysts of sanidine feldspar. Other minerals are found in minor veins and vugs presumably from later alteration.
